Water: a key element for a sustainable development Print E-mail
Sustainable access to resources stems from our concern about poverty alleviation and how to ensure that everyone attains a secure livelihood through equal access to food, energy, shelter, health & welfare, social security, water & sanitation, education and transport.

Of primary concern is that decisions about access, resources and services need to be made in democratic and transparent ways and that solutions to access must combine measures for price equity, decent employment, a fair distribution and availability of resources.

Water
Clean water is one of life’s most essential substances. Support for universal, egalitarian and environmentally sound access to basic resources defines for us the core action lines.

Water, amongst other resources, should not be considered a commodity and the tendency to privatize related utilities should be discouraged.

Instead, understanding how to improve public utilities should be a priority, and should be backed up with the necessary institutional and financial mechanisms to do so.

The availability of resources is another issue. This relates to the fact that the world is consuming vast amounts of non-renewable resources. World-wide action is also needed to change current patterns of consumption and production: at the community level: domestically and by individuals.
