ICEM condemns violations of trade union rights in South Africa Print E-mail

Management at South African Pulp & Paper mill refuses to accept responsibility for a chain of events that took place 50 days ago regarding work safety.Sappi/Enstra Paper Mill in South Africa is denying workers union representation after they have taken a stand against unsafe worker conditions following a worker’s refusal to perform unsafe work.

19 are now suspended and face discipline following spirited safety strikes. Now, Sappi refuses to do what is right and just and fair … to reinstate the trade unionists. 23 other workers face disciplinary panels. They are still on the job, but with no legitimate, duly-elected union representation.

The ICEM considers the Sappi/Enstra situation at present a serious violation of basic trade union rights and is urgently calling for decisive action. To read more follow the
