Labour and the Environment

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Trade Unions have initiated a jointly work-line on “Labour and the Environment” with the agreement to develop a biannual working programme, already initiated in April 2007 up until June 2009.

This is the first programme of such a kind, which aims at improving engagement of workers and trade unions in the development and implementation of environmental policy.

The project will develop in the three following regions: Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America and the Caribbean, and it will focus on public awareness, capacity building and extension of good trade union experiences.

This programme addresses two working areas: Climate change and Sound and Sustainable Management of Chemicals.

This initiative has been possible thanks to the support and contribution of the Government of Spain
