Sustainlabour is an International Labour Foundation that works for sustainable development, for and with Trade Unions. This is quite new Foundation which was set up in 2004.
This initiative was launched by a group of trade unionists that were working on the agenda of sustainable development and they thought that it was necessary to develop a tool to support this work, so to help to coordinate better trade union initiatives and to maintain a regular work between the different meetings. And above all, to provide technical assistance in issues related to environment.
Sustainlabour was founded and has grown with the belief that workers can play a fundamental role in the route to a sustainable world. Trade unions are in a unique position to stimulate the social aspects of sustainable development while at the same time can contribute to the economic and environmental dimensions.
The composition of the Board is based on the principle of plurality and exchange of views on labour and environmental issues. To ensure a Trade Union perspective, two-thirds of the board members are trade union representatives, with the participation of representatives from NGOs and academic institutions, among others.
The board of Sustainlabour is composed by Víctor Báez Mosqueira, ORIT/CIOSL, Brazil; Joel Decaillon, ETUC/CES, Belgium; Rita de Cassia Evaristo, CUT, Brazil; Bjorn Erikson LO-Norway; Marga Ferre, Spain; Nilton Benedito Branco Freitas, Brazil; Winston Gereluk, Canada;Andrew Kailembo, ICFTU-Afro, Kenya;Temístocles Marcelos Neto, CUT, Brazil; Joaquín Nieto CCOO, Spain; Bheki Ntshalintshali, COSATU, South Africa; Govindasamy Rajasaharan, ICFTU-APRO, Malaysia.
To sum up, this is a project that intends to involve all trade unions on environmental issues, and to ensure that labour issues are taken on board on the environmental agenda.
