In Uruguay, the paper industry recorded a 40,9% increase in production in 2007 (the same year in which the Botnia pulp mill began operating, one of the biggest in the region). The physical volume of paper production and related products grew by more than 5 fold in relation to 2005 figures. Currently, the sector employs close to 130.000 workers, with an employment growth rate of 25% between 2007 and 2010.

This leaflet was produced with the objective to inform, raise awareness and disseminate proposals for action to reduce chemical risk in this sector. It was produced by the trade unions participating in the project "Enabling Workers and Workplaces for SAICM implementation", implemented by Sustainlabour in Brazil, Chile and Uruguay from October 2008 to September 2010.
